RESCHEDULING NOTICE - PUBLIC HEARING

The Public Hearing regarding the rescindment of the following by-laws: Committees and Boards By-Law, Town Meetings By-Law and Town Council By-Law, originally scheduled for April 6th, 2016 has been rescheduled to May 4th, 2016.  The public is encouraged to attend on this date to provide input.  Copies of these By-Laws, as well as the new Town Council Committees Policy and Town Council Meeting Policy, intended to take their place, are available on this website and at the Town Office, 168 Water Street.

Committee Members Wanted

Are you looking for an opportunity to get more involved in your community? Do you have ideas for improving our town that you would like to share?  

The Town of Shelburne is seeking interested community volunteers to join members of the Town Council on our Council Committees. These Committees are an essential part of our democratic process and provide an opportunity for citizens to work together with members of Council to shape the future of our shared community. As a Committee member you will consider and vote on new ideas, participate in discussions on issues affecting our community, and make recommendations to Council which will help to set Town policies.  

The following External & Committees of Council require your participation to be successful:
 
Community Participation & Volunteerism
This Committee is charged with recommending policies, programs and practices for the Town of Shelburne designed to encourage community participation and foster volunteer initiatives for the betterment of our community, and with monitoring the effects of these recommendations.  

Shelburne Port Authority
This Committee is charged with recommending policies, programs and practices for the Town of Shelburne designed to improve and enhance the capacity of the Shelburne Marine Terminal to serve as a significant economic driver, and with monitoring the effects of these recommendations.  

We are also accepting applications for the following external committees:

Roseway Hospital Charitable Foundation

The Town of Shelburne is in the process of conducting a plan review entitled 'Plan Shelburne'. This review process will update the Town's Municipal Planning Strategy, Land Use By-law, and Subdivision By-law.  

Plan Shelburne has started with four public participation sessions scheduled to take place roughly every two weeks from the end of January to early March 2016. The fourth session focuses on the themes of Active Transportation & Recreation.

Anti-Discrimination & Racism Committee - STATEMENT

Due to circumstances beyond our control, for example a consistent lack of quorum and public interest, there was a decision made by the Town Council to discontinue the Anti-Discrimination & Racism Committee. The Economic Development Committee, another committee of Council, was also discontinued for similar reasons. Town Council recognizes and thanks those community members who did participate in the Committee. Town Council continues to support anti-discrimination and racism initiatives in the community.  

Several resources exist for community members including the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission (www.humanrights.gov.ns.ca) and for more information on other available resources please see the Shelburne County Helping Tree for direction which is located under Living in Shelburne on the website.

Notice for Plan Shelburne: Public Participation Session #3

The Town of Shelburne is in the process of conducting a plan review entitled 'Plan Shelburne'. This review process will update the Town's Municipal Planning Strategy, Land Use By-law, and Subdivision By-law.

Plan Shelburne has started with four public participation sessions scheduled to take place roughly every two weeks from the end of January to early March 2016. The third session focuses on the theme of 'Economic Development' and will include such topics as Home-based Businesses, Signage, Transportation (truck routes), Commercial Zoning, and Parking. The remaining session will cover the theme of Active Transportation & Recreation.  

Each public session is scheduled to take place twice, noontime and evening; these two sessions will cover the same subjects and town residents need attend only the one most convenient for them. The sessions are informal and you are encouraged to ask questions, provide input, discuss opportunities, and help shape the direction of the planning documents.

The public participation sessions are intended to provide residents with structured opportunities to give input into the drafting of the Town's key planning documents. The Town of Shelburne will be holding a Public Hearing regarding the new Alternative Voting By-Law.  The proposed By-Law is pursuant to the Municipal Elections Act  http://nslegislature.ca/legc/statutes/muncpel.htm.
